An equestrian statue on a tall stone plinth stands in an empty square, ringed by an iron railing and a chain strung between low bollards, in front of the colonnaded façade of a palace. Everything is in pale stone greys and fawns under a white sky, with no people anywhere. The statue is Jacques Saly's Frederik V on Horseback of 1768, commissioned by the Asiatic Company for the centre of Amalienborg in Copenhagen. Hammershøi obtained permission to paint the view from the second floor of Levetzau's Palace, and at about 1.7 square metres it is among his largest canvases. The National Gallery of Denmark acquired it in 1896.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.

Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — black suits the deep tones of this period; dark wood warms it.
