Women and children of the Breton fishing village of Cancale walk across the wet sand at low tide with baskets and nets, the sky and the shine of the beach filling the upper half of the canvas. Sargent spent the summer of 1877 at Cancale and worked the sketches into this painting, his first submission to the Paris Salon, where it was shown in 1878 and won him an honourable mention. It was long in the Corcoran Gallery of Art and passed to the National Gallery of Art in Washington in 2014.
This full-bleed edition prints the work edge to edge from a high-resolution scan of the original, very slightly cropped (a few percent at most) to fit the sheet. The gallery edition shows the whole work, uncropped. The original is in the public domain.
