Ships and a church tower on the Venetian lagoon dissolve into a deep blue night, with a few lights on the water. Whistler went to Venice in 1879, bankrupt after his libel suit against Ruskin, with a commission for etchings, and stayed fourteen months; he also painted a handful of nocturnes there. This one is in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
This full-bleed edition prints the work edge to edge from a high-resolution scan of the original, very slightly cropped (a few percent at most) to fit the sheet. The gallery edition shows the whole work, uncropped. The original is in the public domain.
