Four women in Japanese robes relax on a balcony, one playing a shamisen, with the Thames at Battersea and its factory chimneys in the background. Whistler based the composition on Japanese prints of women on a veranda, setting it in his own London. It is in the Freer Gallery of Art, Washington.
This full-bleed edition prints the work edge to edge from a high-resolution scan of the original, very slightly cropped (a few percent at most) to fit the sheet. The gallery edition shows the whole work, uncropped. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
A decorative blend of Japan and London in green and flesh tones for a living room, bedroom or reading corner, framed in dark wood. It suits pale green, blush or warm white walls and pairs with The Golden Screen.
