Movement
Realism

Six young men swim and sun themselves on a stone pier at Dove Lake, a pond near Philadelphia, with Eakins himself swimming in the lower right and his red setter Harry beside him. The figures were posed from Eakins's own photographs of his students, and the pyramid of bodies recalls classical sculpture. Edward Coates, a director of the Pennsylvania Academy, commissioned it and then declined it. The Amon Carter Museum of American Art in Fort Worth bought it in 1990.

This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.

Where it works

A sunlit study of swimmers in green and gold for a bathroom, study or pool house, framed in dark wood. It suits sage or warm white walls. Not for children's rooms.

Is this the whole painting, or a crop?
The whole work, uncropped. The exhibition-poster edition sets the complete image above typography designed in-house.
Is Swimming (The Swimming Hole) in the public domain?
Yes. Thomas Eakins (1844–1916) died more than 70 years ago and the work was published before 1929, so the painting itself is public domain. This print is a reproduction made from a high-resolution scan of the original, which is held by Amon Carter Museum of American Art.
What is it printed on?
Heavyweight matte fine-art paper with pigment inks, made to order in 12×18, 16×24 and 24×36 inches; every size is also offered framed in black or dark wood, with plexiglass and no mat. Colours are matched to the scan, not brightened.
When was Swimming (The Swimming Hole) painted, and in what medium?
Swimming (The Swimming Hole) dates from 1885 and was made in oil on canvas; the original measures 69.5 × 92.4 cm.
What size works above a sofa or bed?
Across a three-seat sofa or a queen bed, 24×36 is the size that reads as one statement piece; 16×24 suits a narrower wall or a pair.
