Two sailors in oilskins stand at the rail of a ship and take a noon sighting, one with an octant to his eye, the other reading his instrument, while the clouds of a passing storm break up behind them. Eight bells marks the end of a four-hour watch. Homer painted it in 1886 at Prouts Neck, and it was widely reproduced as an etching. The painting is in the Addison Gallery of American Art, Andover, Massachusetts.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
