Hammershøi turns from his work to look over his shoulder at us, a brush raised at the left edge, his dark jacket almost merging with the mottled violet-grey wall. To the right a glazed door stands open, and through its panes a window with a pale curtain catches the daylight. He painted it in 1911 at Spurveskjul, a cottage at Sorgenfri north of Copenhagen. The National Gallery of Denmark, which acquired it in 1916, notes that he shows himself painting the very canvas we are looking at rather than a picture within the picture, so the work reads as both a portrait and paint on a surface.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
