About this work

Year
1906
Medium
Oil on canvas
Original size

Movement
Symbolism

The grey-green spire of St Peter's Church rises above a long nave with ochre tiled roofs, seen from above across a tiled garden wall, with a bare tree on the left and a grey-white sky filling the upper half of the canvas. There is no one in sight, and the haze softens every edge. Hammershøi dated the picture 1906 when he showed it the following year at an exhibition of his paintings at the E. J. van Wisselingh gallery in London. The National Gallery of Denmark acquired it in 1908, and it has since travelled to exhibitions in New York, Toronto and Seattle.

This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.

Where it works

Ochre roofs, a grey spire and a misty sky suit a hallway, staircase or study with warm grey or stone walls. Pair it with Van Gogh's The Church at Auvers and hang this one at 24×36 in a dark wood frame.

Is St. Peter's Church, Copenhagen in the public domain?
Yes. Vilhelm Hammershøi (1864–1916) died more than 70 years ago and the work was made and first published more than 95 years ago, so the painting itself is public domain in the US and Europe. This print is a reproduction made from a high-resolution scan of the original, which is held by Statens Museum for Kunst (SMK).
What is it printed on?
Heavyweight matte fine-art paper with pigment inks, made to order in 12×18, 16×24 and 24×36 inches; every size is also offered framed in black or dark wood, with plexiglass and no mat. Colours are matched to the scan, not brightened.
When was St. Peter's Church, Copenhagen painted, and in what medium?
St. Peter's Church, Copenhagen dates from 1906 and was made in oil on canvas; the original measures 133 × 118 cm.
What size works above a sofa or bed?
Across a three-seat sofa or a queen bed, 24×36 is the size that reads as one statement piece; 16×24 suits a narrower wall or a pair. For St. Peter's Church, Copenhagen we'd choose 24×36.
