A white-bearded guide in a broad hat paddles a red canoe across grey water, his gear and the day's game piled in the bow, beneath a sky of torn grey and white cloud. Homer spent many summers at a hunting and fishing club in the Adirondack Mountains of New York, and the local guides who worked there became some of his favourite models. The watercolour is worked with blotting and scraping, so the paper itself makes the light on the water. It is in the Art Institute of Chicago.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
A misty grey watercolour with one red canoe for a cabin, study or den, framed in dark wood. It suits charcoal, slate or warm white walls at 12×18 and pairs with Homer's The Blue Boat.
