A white-bearded guide in a broad hat paddles a red canoe across grey water, his gear and the day's game piled in the bow, beneath a sky of torn grey and white cloud. Homer spent many summers at a hunting and fishing club in the Adirondack Mountains of New York, and the local guides who worked there became some of his favourite models. The watercolour is worked with blotting and scraping, so the paper itself makes the light on the water. It is in the Art Institute of Chicago.

This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.

Where it works

A misty grey watercolour with one red canoe for a cabin, study or den, framed in dark wood. It suits charcoal, slate or warm white walls at 18×12 and pairs with Homer's The Blue Boat.

Size. We'd hang this one at 18×12. Prints at 18×12 in — 18×12 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid.

Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — black suits the deep tones of this period; dark wood warms it.

Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).

Is this the whole painting, or a crop?
The whole work, uncropped. The image fills the print at the painting's own proportions; nothing is trimmed to fit a frame.
Is Adirondacks Guide in the public domain?
Yes. Winslow Homer (1836–1910) died more than 70 years ago and the work was published before 1929, so the painting itself is public domain. This print is a reproduction made from a high-resolution scan of the original, which is held by Art Institute of Chicago.
What is it printed on?
Heavyweight matte fine-art paper with pigment inks, made to order in 18×12 inches; every size is also offered framed in black or dark wood, with plexiglass and no mat. Colours are matched to the scan, not brightened.
When was Adirondacks Guide painted, and in what medium?
Adirondacks Guide dates from 1892 and was made in watercolour with touches of gouache over graphite on paper; the original measures 32.9 × 54.5 cm.
What size works above a sofa or bed?
Across a three-seat sofa or a queen bed, 18×12 is the size that reads as one statement piece. For Adirondacks Guide we'd choose 18×12. It is a landscape print, wider than it is tall, at the painting's own proportions.
