Women and children of the Breton fishing village of Cancale walk across the wet sand at low tide with baskets and nets, the sky and the shine of the beach filling the upper half of the canvas. Sargent spent the summer of 1877 at Cancale and worked the sketches into this painting, his first submission to the Paris Salon, where it was shown in 1878 and won him an honourable mention. It was long in the Corcoran Gallery of Art and passed to the National Gallery of Art in Washington in 2014.

This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.

Where it works

A breezy beach scene in silver, blue and sand, for a living room, bathroom or seaside house in a dark wood frame. It suits white or pale blue walls and pairs with Homer's Breezing Up.

Is En route pour la pêche (Setting Out to Fish) in the public domain?
Yes. John Singer Sargent (1856–1925) died more than 70 years ago and the work was published before 1929, so the painting itself is public domain. This print is a reproduction made from a high-resolution scan of the original, which is held by National Gallery of Art.
What is it printed on?
Heavyweight matte fine-art paper with pigment inks, made to order in 12×18, 16×24 and 24×36 inches; every size is also offered framed in black or dark wood, with plexiglass and no mat. Colours are matched to the scan, not brightened.
When was En route pour la pêche (Setting Out to Fish) painted, and in what medium?
En route pour la pêche (Setting Out to Fish) dates from 1878 and was made in oil on canvas; the original measures 78.7 × 122.9 cm.
What size works above a sofa or bed?
Across a three-seat sofa or a queen bed, 24×36 is the size that reads as one statement piece; 16×24 suits a narrower wall or a pair.
