Edith Schiele stands full length and face-on against a pale, clouded ground, hands loose at her sides, in a long dress of vertical stripes in green, red, yellow, blue and pink, with a white ruffled blouse, a dark sash and white shoes; her auburn hair is piled high. Schiele painted his wife in 1915, during a leave from military service. Kunstmuseum Den Haag says she made the dress herself from striped curtains in his studio. The museum bought the painting in 1927 at an exhibition of Austrian Expressionism, and it is the only painting by Schiele in the Netherlands.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
A rainbow of stripes on a pale ground makes a cheerful, upright portrait for a hallway, dressing room or living room with white walls. Pair it with Klimt's Portrait of Emilie Flöge at 16×24 in a dark wood frame.

Size. We'd hang this one at 16×24. Prints at 12×18, 16×24 in — 12×18 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 16×24 above a desk, console or in a hallway.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — dark wood flatters the lighter palette; black sharpens it.
Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
