A man lies on the white sand beside the broken hull of his boat after a storm, the surf still running and the sky clearing behind. Whether he is alive or drowned Homer leaves unclear. It was painted in watercolour in the Bahamas in 1899 and belongs to the same years as The Gulf Stream, which shows another lone sailor at the mercy of the sea. It is in the Art Institute of Chicago.
This full-bleed edition prints the work edge to edge from a high-resolution scan of the original, very slightly cropped (a few percent at most) to fit the sheet. The gallery edition shows the whole work, uncropped. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
A powerful shoreline watercolour in turquoise and white for a study or hallway, framed in black. It suits white or slate walls and pairs with The Gulf Stream.
