A dark cliff of brown and grey rock rises steeply across the canvas while surf explodes against its foot, and a few tiny figures stand on the summit at the upper right, dwarfed by the scale of the coast. Homer painted it at Prouts Neck in Maine in 1894, in the decade he devoted almost entirely to the sea and the rocks below his studio. The thick, scraped paint gives the rock real weight against the white spray. It came to the national collection in Washington in 1909.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
