A dark-haired woman in profile wears a heavy jewelled headdress with hanging ornaments, enclosed in a circular frame with a lace-patterned border and surrounded by stylised flowers, a few strands of hair breaking past the edge of the circle. Mucha designed the Byzantine Heads, a blonde and a brunette, in Paris in 1897 for F. Champenois, the printer with whom he had just signed an exclusive contract. The jewels and mosaics of Byzantium, which he saw as the root of Slav culture, run through his decorative work, and the lace border echoes Moravian folk craft. The pair sold widely and was issued in several formats, including framed versions and decorative tin plates. The impression reproduced here is in the Bibliothèque nationale de France.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
