Seen from slightly above, Edith Schiele sits with her hands folded, wrapped in an olive-green jacket over a dress of bold black and white stripes, a white collar edged in red at her throat and her piled-up hair in the same olive tone. The figure fills an otherwise bare cream sheet. Schiele made the drawing in pencil and gouache in 1915, the year he married Edith Harms, who had lived with her family across the road from his studio in Hietzing. According to the Leopold Museum, she went on to pose for him repeatedly. The sheet has belonged to the museum since 1994.
This full-bleed edition prints the work edge to edge from a high-resolution scan of the original, very slightly cropped (a few percent at most) to fit the sheet. The gallery edition shows the whole work, uncropped. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
Black-and-white stripes, olive green and a bare cream sheet suit a bedroom, dressing room or hallway with white or warm grey walls. Pair it with Schiele's Self-Portrait with Physalis at 18×24 in a black frame.
