A pale mother in a grey-white headscarf sits facing us, eyes heavy, her lap covered by a crumpled white cloth, flanked by two small children in jackets of striped, patchwork colour, each set against an orange shape like a cushion or chair back; zigzag-patterned skirts fall to a fringed hem, and the background is almost black. Schiele signed and dated it 1917, though the Belvedere dates the work 1915–1917. An earlier version, Mother with Two Children II of 1915, is in the Leopold Museum. The canvas belonged to Karl Grünwald and then Jenny Steiner, from whom the Belvedere bought it in 1951.
