A cracked, roughly plastered house front fills the canvas, crossed by two broad bands of brown and grey shingle roof, its windows scattered unevenly, each different, some open and some shut, framed in red, ochre or green; a blue strip of path runs along the bottom and there is no sky. Schiele painted it in 1914, probably after a building in Krumau (Český Krumlov), his mother's birthplace, and used paint that resembles real plaster. The Belvedere bought it in 1948 from the painter Hans Böhler in New York, who had owned it since before 1917.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
Chalky white plaster, brown shingle and small flashes of red make a textured, quiet picture for a hallway, kitchen or study. Pair it with Hammershøi's Interior, Sunlight on the Floor at 24×18 in a black frame.

Size. We'd hang this one at 24×18. Prints at 16×12, 24×18 in — 16×12 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 24×18 above a console or sideboard.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — dark wood flatters the lighter palette; black sharpens it.
Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
