Two nude lovers lie wrapped together on a rumpled white sheet edged in blue, the man's muscular back turned towards us, the woman's arms around his neck and her dark hair spread across the top of the canvas. The ground around them is a loose field of yellow-green brushstrokes. Schiele painted it in 1917. The Belvedere describes the couple clinging to each other while their lower bodies seem to drift apart, an image of desire and separation anxiety, tenderness and despair rather than display. The canvas belonged to the Viennese collector Heinrich Rieger, and the museum bought it from Robert Rieger in New York in 1950.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
Warm skin tones on white linen and a yellow-green ground make an intimate picture for a main bedroom or a private study. Pair it with Klimt's The Kiss at 24×16 in a black frame.

Size. We'd hang this one at 24×16. Prints at 18×12, 24×16 in — 18×12 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 24×16 above a console or sideboard.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — dark wood flatters the lighter palette; black sharpens it.
Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
