Two regulars of the Irish and American Bar in the rue Royale, a coachman of the Rothschilds and a jockey, sit at the counter while Ralph, the Chinese-American barman, mixes drinks beneath the bottles. Toulouse-Lautrec designed the lithograph in 1895 as a poster for the Chicago literary magazine The Chap-Book, which had asked him for a design; the bar was one of his favourite haunts, where he drank cocktails with the jockeys and grooms of the English colony. The flat ochre, black and white and the crop of the bar rail are among his most economical. Printed by Chaix, Paris. The impression reproduced belongs to the Cleveland Museum of Art.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.

Size. We'd hang this one at 24×16. Prints at 18×12, 24×16, 36×24 in — 18×12 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 24×16 above a console or sideboard; 36×24 as the statement piece above a sofa or headboard.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — dark wood flatters the lighter palette; black sharpens it.
Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
