Jane Avril, the dancer Toulouse-Lautrec drew more than any other performer, twists in a long black dress with a snake coiling around it, her red hair thrown back and her hands raised to her hat. This was the last poster he made for her, in 1899, and it was never used: Avril's career was winding down and the design, with its fin-de-siècle serpent, was thought too strange. Printed by H. Stern in Paris in only a small edition, it is now one of the rarest of his posters. Compared with the 1893 Jardin de Paris poster, the line is looser and the whole figure is given over to a single twisting movement. The impression reproduced is in the Boston Public Library.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
A single twisting black figure on cream, for a dressing room, hallway or studio at 16×24 or 24×36 in thin black, no mat. It reads well against a white or blush wall and makes a pair with the earlier Jane Avril (Jardin de Paris).

Size. We'd hang this one at 16×24. Prints at 12×18, 16×24, 24×36 in — 12×18 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 16×24 above a desk, console or in a hallway; 24×36 as the statement piece above a sofa or bed.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — dark wood flatters the lighter palette; black sharpens it.
Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
