A great mass of roses tumbles out of a green vase against a green ground, the ribbons of paint laid on in diagonal strokes that keep the whole surface moving. Van Gogh painted it in May 1890 in the last weeks before he left the asylum at Saint-Rémy for Auvers, when he felt he was coming to terms with his illness and, as he told Theo, worked as if in a frenzy on big bouquets of irises and roses. It is one of two rose pictures from those days and among his largest still lifes. The blooms were originally pink, giving a complementary contrast with the green that has faded as the red pigment lost its colour, so the painting now reads in soft whites and greens. Pamela Harriman gave it to the National Gallery of Art in Washington in memory of W. Averell Harriman in 1991.
