Edith Schiele sits on a chair with her hands clasped in her lap, a blue jacket over a white blouse with a black bow, a long pale skirt spread almost to the floor and her red-blond hair piled high. Around her is a dense weave of blues, greens and black. Schiele painted his wife in 1918, three years after their marriage, and it became the first of his paintings to be bought by a museum. The Belvedere's director found it too vivid and decorative, so Schiele repainted the dress in quieter colours; technical study in 2018 brought the original version to light. Edith died that October, three days before him.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
Deep blue and green around a pale skirt make a calm, reflective portrait for a living room, study or bedroom on a white or soft grey wall. Pair it with Klimt's Portrait of Emilie Flöge at 16×24 in a black frame.
