A tall clump of sunflowers fills the canvas in dull greens, browns and olive, the big heads drooping and dark, a few smaller yellow blooms near the bottom; the mass of leaves stands against a rough, chalky white ground at the sides. Schiele painted it in 1911 and signed it lower left. The Belvedere links his liking for sunflowers, like Klimt's, to Vincent van Gogh, but here the leaves wither and the young blooms cannot halt the decay, a reflection of inner turmoil and transience. The museum bought it in 1924 from Hermann Trenkwald.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
Olive, brown and a few yellow flowers on a chalky ground make a muted, autumnal still life for a kitchen, dining room or study. Pair it with Van Gogh's Sunflowers at 16×24 in a dark wood frame.
