A red cow charges down a Montmartre street, chasing an old man who has dropped his umbrella, while a policeman and a girl on a bicycle join the stampede. Toulouse-Lautrec designed the poster in 1896 for La Vache enragée, the satirical monthly founded by Adolphe Willette and Roedel, whose name played on the Montmartre expression for living hand to mouth; the magazine also organised the Vachalcade, a carnival parade through the quarter. The orange cow, the green coat and the cobbled street are drawn with his quickest brush. Printed by Chaix, Paris. The impression reproduced is in the Bibliothèque nationale de France.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
