Ida Hammershøi sits at a small table on the left, dressed in black and seen from behind, while sunlight comes through a curtained double window and lays a bright grid of panes across the grey floor. A white panelled door fills the right side of the picture and two small framed pictures hang on the pale wall. Hammershøi painted the room in the flat at Strandgade 30 in Copenhagen in 1901. He chose his homes for their age: in a 1909 magazine interview he said, "I personally prefer the Old; old buildings, old furniture." The National Gallery of Denmark acquired it in 1924.
