Two white panelled doors stand wide open on either side of a bare room, and through the left-hand doorway a third door, also open, leads the eye on through further rooms toward light from the courtyard. The floorboards are dark and polished, catching reflections from the windows behind the painter. Hammershøi painted it in 1905 in the dining room of his flat at Strandgade 30 in Copenhagen, a room he painted about twenty times, more than any other. It belongs to the David Collection in Copenhagen, whose catalogue notes that the picture never reveals where the doors lead.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
Warm whites and dark polished boards suit an entrance hall, landing or corridor where real doors open off the wall. Pair it with Hammershøi's Interior, Sunlight on the Floor and hang this one at 16×24 in a dark wood frame.

Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — black suits the deep tones of this period; dark wood warms it.
