A young teacher stands at the front of a bare one-room schoolhouse, book in hand, while barefoot children sit at long benches in the sunlight from the windows. Homer painted the country school several times in the early 1870s, when such schools were being replaced and the subject already felt nostalgic. This small version is in the Addison Gallery of American Art, Andover, Massachusetts.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
