A woman draped in deep blue stands beneath a single bright star in the night sky, her hands folded and her eyes lowered, in a tall panel bordered with a slim ornamental frame. Mucha designed the panel in Paris in 1902 as one of The Moon and the Stars, a set of four, The Moon, the Evening Star, the Pole Star and the Morning Star, issued as colour lithographs by F. Champenois. The Pole Star, fixed in the heavens while the others wheel around it, is given the stillest of the four figures. The series marks a late, sombre turn in his decorative work, with the women wrapped in dark drapery against the night rather than set among flowers, and it was among the last of the Paris panel sets before he turned to Slav subjects.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
