A small oval print of Abraham Lincoln is tacked to a battered green door, with dates carved into the wood and scraps of paper and a key around it. Peto painted several such memorials to Lincoln, the year of his assassination becoming a kind of epitaph. It is in the Minneapolis Institute of Art.
This full-bleed edition prints the work edge to edge from a high-resolution scan of the original, very slightly cropped (a few percent at most) to fit the sheet. The gallery edition shows the whole work, uncropped. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
A quiet green trompe-l'oeil memorial for a study, office or library in a dark wood frame. It suits warm grey or deep green walls and is a gift for a history lover.
