A tall brown vase holds a loose bouquet of red and white flowers, a blue bloom, pink roses, ferns and dark green leaves, while pale butterflies, seed pods and petals float freely in the grey-green and ochre space around it. A blue butterfly hovers low at right. Redon painted the canvas in 1905, in the years when he moved from black charcoal drawings to colour. His interest in flowers went back to his youth near Bordeaux and his friendship with the botanist Armand Clavaud. The painting is in the Art Institute of Chicago, a gift of Mary and Leigh Block.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
Soft grey-green, ochre and scattered reds make a gentle, drifting picture for a bedroom, hallway or reading room. Pair it with Mucha's The Flowers: Carnation at 16×24 in a dark wood frame.

Size. We'd hang this one at 16×24. Prints at 12×18, 16×24, 24×36 in — 12×18 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 16×24 above a desk, console or in a hallway; 24×36 as the statement piece above a sofa or bed.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — black suits the deep tones of this period; dark wood warms it.
Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
