A canal in Venice runs between sunlit houses toward a bridge and a bell tower, with boats moored along the water, all painted in transparent washes of watercolour. Sargent returned to Venice almost every year and from about 1900 painted it mostly in watercolour, working from a gondola close to the water. The Metropolitan Museum of Art bought this sheet with a group of his watercolours in 1915.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
A bright Venetian canal in warm ochre and blue for a hallway, kitchen or study in a thin black frame. It works on white or warm stone walls and pairs with Prendergast's Venice watercolours.
