Aristide Bruant is seen from behind, his black cape, wide hat and red scarf filling the sheet, under the lettering "Tous les soirs Bruant au Mirliton, bock 13 sous". Toulouse-Lautrec designed the poster in 1893 for Bruant's own cabaret, the Mirliton on the boulevard Rochechouart, where the singer insulted his customers in argot while they drank the thirteen-sou beer advertised here. Turning the famous figure round, so that only the hat brim and the scarf identify him, was a joke only a familiar silhouette could carry. The sheet is printed in a flat black with the scarf in red. The impression reproduced is in the Bibliothèque nationale de France.
This full-bleed edition prints the work edge to edge from a high-resolution scan of the original, very slightly cropped (a few percent at most) to fit the sheet. The gallery edition shows the whole work, uncropped. The original is in the public domain.
