A woman in a loose dressing gown sits on the edge of a bed, her hair down, her hat and a top hat laid beside her on the pillow; the word Elles is lettered above in Toulouse-Lautrec's hand. This is the frontispiece and poster of Elles, the portfolio of ten colour lithographs of the women of the maisons closes that he published with Gustave Pellet in 1896 and exhibited at La Plume's Salon des Cent. The model was the clowness Cha-U-Kao. The muted grey-green and the pink of the gown, the unhurried pose and the absence of any customer make the series the gentlest record of that world. Printed by Auguste Clot, Paris. The impression reproduced belongs to the Cleveland Museum of Art.
This full-bleed edition prints the work edge to edge from a high-resolution scan of the original, very slightly cropped (a few percent at most) to fit the sheet. The gallery edition shows the whole work, uncropped. The original is in the public domain.
