Two peach trees in full pink blossom stand in a ploughed orchard behind a reed fence under a blue and white sky. When the fruit trees around Arles flowered in the spring of 1888, Van Gogh painted them almost daily, producing fourteen canvases in a few weeks, and he thought this one of the best. On the evening he finished it he found a letter from his sister with news that Anton Mauve had died: the Dutch painter was a cousin by marriage and the man who had taught him to use oils and watercolour. Moved, Van Gogh wrote Souvenir de Mauve on the canvas and asked that it be sent to Mauve's widow, choosing it because its delicate palette felt tender and gay rather than grave. The painting is in the Kröller-Müller Museum at Otterlo, and the inscription is still legible on the canvas.
