A woman in a blue and white patterned dress sits in a wicker chair in a quiet, sparsely furnished room, the grey light of a wet day coming through a doorway beyond, a blue and white jar in the corner and a row of small pictures and ornaments along the mantelpiece. Benson painted it in 1906, and its muted colours and calm, carefully arranged space owe much to Vermeer, whom he and his Boston colleagues admired. It was shown in St. Louis in 1907 and with the Ten American Painters in New York and Philadelphia in 1908, and the Art Institute of Chicago bought it in 1910.

This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.

Where it works

A calm, muted interior in warm grey, blue and soft brown for a reading corner, bedroom or study in a dark wood frame. It pairs well with Tarbell's interiors and suits a warm white or greige wall.

Is this the whole painting, or a crop?
The whole work, uncropped. The exhibition-poster edition sets the complete image above typography designed in-house.
Is Rainy Day in the public domain?
Yes. Frank W. Benson (1862–1951) died more than 70 years ago and the work was published before 1929, so the painting itself is public domain. This print is a reproduction made from a high-resolution scan of the original, which is held by Art Institute of Chicago.
What is it printed on?
Heavyweight matte fine-art paper with pigment inks, made to order in 12×18, 16×24 and 24×36 inches; every size is also offered framed in black or dark wood, with plexiglass and no mat. Colours are matched to the scan, not brightened.
When was Rainy Day painted, and in what medium?
Rainy Day dates from 1906 and was made in oil on canvas; the original measures 63.5 × 76.2 cm.
What size works above a sofa or bed?
Across a three-seat sofa or a queen bed, 24×36 is the size that reads as one statement piece; 16×24 suits a narrower wall or a pair.
