A woman wrapped in dark drapery floats against the deepening blue of the evening sky beneath a single star, her face turned downward and her hair loose, in a tall panel with a narrow ornamental border. Mucha designed the Evening Star in Paris in 1902 as one of The Moon and the Stars, a set of four decorative panels, The Moon, the Evening Star, the Pole Star and the Morning Star, printed as colour lithographs by F. Champenois. The figures of the set are seen almost in silhouette against the night, a departure from the bright flowers and circular haloes of his earlier series. The four panels were sold together under a printed cover; a complete set is held by the Bibliothèque nationale de France. It was among the last of his Paris decorative series.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
