A tangle of alligators lies basking in the mud at the edge of a pool, their pale, ridged backs painted in quick strokes of grey, blue and white beneath a screen of trees. Sargent made the watercolour in Florida in 1917, during a visit made to paint a portrait commission, and spent his free days sketching the alligators. It is one of his most celebrated late watercolours for its free, confident handling. The Worcester Art Museum bought it the same year.
This full-bleed edition prints the work edge to edge from a high-resolution scan of the original, very slightly cropped (a few percent at most) to fit the sheet. The gallery edition shows the whole work, uncropped. The original is in the public domain.
