A young woman in black, usually identified as Sargent's sister Violet, sits at a round table spread with a white cloth and silver, peeling an orange, in a room with deep red walls. Sargent painted it in his Paris years, when he was experimenting with quick, informal interiors alongside his grand portraits. The white tablecloth is painted in a few loose sweeps that catch the light from the open door. It came to Harvard's Fogg Museum in 1943 with the bequest of Grenville L. Winthrop.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
