Ida Hammershøi sits at a white-covered table in a plain black dress, stirring a small white cup on its saucer and looking off to the left with a still, unsmiling face. The background is flat grey, and a dark brown band runs round all four edges of the canvas like a painted frame. Hammershøi married Ida Ilsted in 1891 and she appears in many of his pictures. He painted this portrait in 1907; one scholar regards it as a study for his portrait of Ida in the Aarhus Kunstmuseum. It entered the National Gallery of Denmark in 1916, the year of the painter's death.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
