Ida Hammershøi sits at a small table on the left, dressed in black and seen from behind, while sunlight comes through a curtained double window and lays a bright grid of panes across the grey floor. A white panelled door fills the right side of the picture and two small framed pictures hang on the pale wall. Hammershøi painted the room in the flat at Strandgade 30 in Copenhagen in 1901. He chose his homes for their age: in a 1909 magazine interview he said, "I personally prefer the Old; old buildings, old furniture." The National Gallery of Denmark acquired it in 1924.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
Whites, pale greys and a patch of sun on the floor make this one of the lighter Hammershøis, easy in a bedroom, bathroom or bright living room. Hang it beside his later Interior, Sunlight on the Floor, this one at 24×36 in a black frame.
