A dense bouquet of irises in a plain vase, the flowers now blue, set against a flat yellow wall and a yellow tabletop. Van Gogh painted it in the psychiatric hospital at Saint-Rémy in 1890, during his final weeks there, as a deliberate study in colour: the irises were originally purple, and the complementary clash of purple against yellow was meant to make their decorative shapes jump forward. As the red component of the pigment has faded the flowers have turned blue, so the contrast is gentler today than he intended. He painted the same bouquet twice, the other version setting purple and pink against green. The flat ground, the absence of shadow and the stems crowding the picture follow the Japanese prints he loved. The painting has never left the family collection and is in the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.
