Edith Schiele sits on a chair with her hands clasped in her lap, a blue jacket over a white blouse with a black bow, a long pale skirt spread almost to the floor and her red-blond hair piled high. Around her is a dense weave of blues, greens and black. Schiele painted his wife in 1918, three years after their marriage, and it became the first of his paintings to be bought by a museum. The Belvedere's director found it too vivid and decorative, so Schiele repainted the dress in quieter colours; technical study in 2018 brought the original version to light. Edith died that October, three days before him.
This full-bleed edition prints the work edge to edge from a high-resolution scan of the original, very slightly cropped (a few percent at most) to fit the sheet. The gallery edition shows the whole work, uncropped. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
Deep blue and green around a pale skirt make a calm, reflective portrait for a living room, study or bedroom on a white or soft grey wall. Pair it with Klimt's Portrait of Emilie Flöge at 18×24 in a black frame.
